12 Ways to Leverage Your Education

Best ways to utilize your education

1. Look for opportunities to improve your communication skills. (Volunteer to be the spokesperson in team projects, grow from feedback given on class presentations, take a public speaking class, etc.)
2. Take the time to meet with a college advisor/ counselor to analyze the subjects you like and the subjects you don’t like. Doing this allows you to realize what you want to focus on for the remainder of your education.
3. Take advantage of working with tutors, mentors, and teacher aides. Asking for help is a part of any career and it is important to feel comfortable approaching individuals for assistance.
4. Join a campus organization and be involved in activities. Better yet, if time allows, become part of the organization’s leadership. This will allow you to learn important skills and build valuable connections.
5. Volunteer with school-endorsed charities and other non-profit organizations. This will allow you to work with professionals.
6. Look into certifications that complement the field/ major you are interested in.
7. Practice your note-taking skills. In business, just like in education, note-taking is an integral part of success.
8. Keep a running resume or portfolio and update your skills as you gain them.
9. Ask your professors and organization leaders for permission as professional references. Remember, it is important to stay in touch with people and keep connections open, check in regularly!
10. Keep track of your awards and accomplishments and add them to your resume, portfolio, and LinkedIn!
11. Attend career fairs and practice speaking to hiring authorities. Find out what they look for and ask questions.
