Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Permit Technician for a direct hire opportunity in Mountain View, CA. This role supports the Building Inspection Division by processing permit applications, assisting customers, reviewing development application materials, calculating fees, and maintaining accurate inspection and permit records.
The Permit Technician is an important customer-facing resource for contractors, architects, engineers, developers, and the public. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who understands building permit processes, enjoys solving problems, and thrives in a collaborative development services environment. Key Responsibilities
- Process building permit and miscellaneous permit applications while ensuring required approvals and documentation are complete.
- Perform basic counter plan review for application completeness and conformance with building codes, City requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Respond to questions from contractors, developers, engineers, architects, and members of the public regarding building codes, permit regulations, and development review requirements.
- Calculate project valuations, plan check fees, permit fees, and related charges, and collect or process fees as required.
- Prepare, coordinate, and maintain property, project, inspection, fire inspection, code enforcement, and building inspection records.
- Assist with inspection data gathering, reports, investigations, filing, indexing, and cross-reference record maintenance.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $60,000 to $75,000 per year.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Process and coordinate building permit applications from intake through required approvals.
- Provide front-counter and phone support regarding permitting, building codes, fees, and development review requirements.
- Review applications for completeness and assist with basic plan checking responsibilities.
- Maintain accurate permit, inspection, fire inspection, code enforcement, and project records.
- 6 to 10 years of relevant experience in permitting, building inspection support, development services, construction administration, or a related municipal or construction environment.
- Working knowledge of building permit processes, permit regulations, application review procedures, and basic building code concepts.
- Ability to calculate valuations, plan check fees, permit fees, and related charges accurately.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly with contractors, architects, engineers, developers, and the public.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, recordkeeping, and file management skills.
- Ability to interpret policies and procedures, manage multiple priorities, and work effectively with department staff and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency with office systems, permit tracking tools, document management, and standard computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a city, county, public agency, or development services department.
- ICC Permit Technician certification or related building code training.
- Familiarity with building inspection, fire inspection, and code enforcement records.
- Experience using permit tracking, land management, or electronic plan review software.
