Job Summary
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented HR Administrator for a temp-to-hire opportunity in Santa Barbara, CA.
The HR Administrator will provide direct administrative support to the HR Director, assist with HRIS reporting and compliance documentation, and train as a payroll backup with the goal of running a full payroll cycle independently within 90 days.
This position offers exposure across payroll, benefits, leave administration, recruitment support, HR operations, audits, and employee data management. The right candidate will be calm under pressure, professional with confidential information, coachable, and committed to growing within HR.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support to the HR Director and assist with day-to-day HR operations.
- Pull, format, and maintain reports from the HRIS and payroll systems.
- Support audits, compliance checks, documentation updates, and employee file accuracy.
- Train as payroll backup and become able to run a full payroll cycle independently within 90 days.
- Assist with administrative tasks across benefits, leave of absence, recruitment, payroll, and HR operations.
- Handle confidential pay, personnel, and employee data with a high level of discretion and professionalism.
Compensation and Benefits
- Pay: $26 to $31 per hour.
- Job Type: Temp-to-Hire.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Provide administrative support across HR operations, payroll, compliance, benefits, leave administration, recruitment, and reporting.
- Pull and format HRIS reports, maintain accurate documentation, and support audits and compliance needs.
- Serve as payroll backup and train to run a complete payroll cycle independently within 90 days.
- Support the HR Director with routine tasks while taking ownership of learned responsibilities.
- 2+ years of HR administrative experience.
- Payroll exposure is required.
- Strong fluency with HRIS and payroll systems, with the ability to learn new platforms quickly.
- AA degree, BA degree, or HR certification preferred.
- High discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential pay and personnel data.
- Detail-oriented, accurate, dependable, and consistent under routine work and pressure.
- Able to work independently on learned tasks and ask appropriate questions on new or ambiguous assignments.
- Warm, personable, coachable, professional, and respectful of role boundaries.
- Committed to building a long-term career in HR administration.
- Adaptable and willing to help across varied administrative tasks in a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PeopleGuru.
- Experience with comparable HRIS or payroll platforms such as Paylocity, Paycom, Rippling, BambooHR, or ADP Workforce Now.
- Prior payroll processing experience in a mid-size employer environment.
- Familiarity with payroll tax, garnishments, and multi-cycle payroll runs.
- HR certification or related college coursework in human resources, business administration, or a related field.
