Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Director of Risk and Compliance for a direct hire opportunity in Pleasanton, CA, with a mission-driven nonprofit charitable organization. This senior leadership role is ideal for a strategic compliance, risk management, grants, or audit professional who wants to make a meaningful impact while protecting organizational integrity, public funding accountability, and regulatory compliance.
The Director of Risk and Compliance will report to the Chief Financial Officer and partner closely with Finance, IT, Program leadership, external legal counsel, and internal compliance staff. This is a highly visible role with strong executive partnership, meaningful community impact, and the opportunity to shape enterprise risk, fiscal compliance, internal controls, contract oversight, data privacy, and public initiative compliance.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead enterprise risk assessments, compliance frameworks, internal controls, and organizational risk management strategies in partnership with executive leadership.
- Partner with the Controller to ensure fiscal compliance for grants, budget allocations, financial reporting, audit preparation, tax filings, and public funding requirements.
- Support compliance design, regulatory oversight, and monitoring workflows for major public initiatives, including subsidized child care and minimum wage floor grant administration.
- Oversee contract lifecycle management, insurance portfolios, subcontractor agreements, legal coordination, and governance-related compliance matters.
- Partner with IT and program leaders on HIPAA, PII, PHI, cybersecurity governance, incident reporting, API/data integration protocols, and privacy audits.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate compliance team members while developing policies, training, corrective action plans, and a proactive culture of compliance.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $150,000 to $166,000 per year.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Lead enterprise risk management, compliance frameworks, internal controls, and audit readiness initiatives.
- Manage public grant compliance, fiscal oversight, contract administration, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Oversee data privacy, cybersecurity governance, legal coordination, insurance, and organizational policy development.
- Supervise compliance staff and partner cross-functionally with Finance, IT, HR, Program leadership, public agencies, and legal counsel.
- 7 to 10+ years of progressive experience in compliance, risk management, grant oversight, audit, or related functions.
- Experience in a complex nonprofit, public agency, or publicly funded environment strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of fiscal compliance, financial reporting, federal regulations, OMB Circulars, 2 CFR 200, and public grant administration.
- Familiarity with ECE subsidy structures such as CAPP, CCTR, and CSPP.
- Knowledge of HIPAA, PII, PHI standards, cybersecurity governance frameworks, and privacy compliance.
- Demonstrated experience managing large-scale public grants, contracts, application lifecycles, subcontractor agreements, and complex contract portfolios.
- Proven staff supervision, mentoring, and team leadership experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex regulatory, financial, and compliance topics to diverse stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and detail-oriented skills.
- Proficiency with Google Suite, grant or compliance management software, automated data extraction tools, and accounting systems such as Intacct, MIP, or QuickBooks.
- Strong commitment to organizational integrity, community equity, and responsible stewardship of public resources.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or Juris Doctor in Law, Healthcare Compliance, Financial Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as Certified Healthcare Compliance, Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional, Certified Public Accountant, or Certified Grants Management Specialist.
- Deep familiarity with nonprofit financial accounting standards, public grant administration, and API-driven data collection databases.
- Experience supporting single audits, independent financial audits, Form 990 compliance, corrective action plans, and public funding compliance reviews.
