Senior Accountant – Public Sector Key Responsibilities
We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join a well-established public-sector organization. This position is ideal for an accounting professional with strong technical accounting skills who is comfortable independently managing complex financial assignments, performing detailed analysis, and supporting accurate financial reporting.
The Senior Accountant will perform advanced professional accounting work involving the preparation, analysis, reconciliation, and maintenance of financial records and reports. This position requires sound judgment, strong analytical skills, and a thorough understanding of accounting principles and practices, particularly within a governmental, municipal, or public-sector environment. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field preferred.
Several years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.
Governmental, municipal, special district, or other public-sector accounting experience strongly preferred.
Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and accounting practices.
Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and account analysis.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting systems.
Ability to independently research and resolve accounting discrepancies.
Excellent attention to detail, organization, and accuracy.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a seasoned accounting professional who can step into a higher-level accounting role and work with limited supervision. They are comfortable analyzing complex financial information, researching discrepancies, preparing accurate financial reports, and collaborating with multiple departments.
Previous experience working within a city, county, water district, special district, government agency, or other public-sector organization would be highly valuable.

Perform advanced accounting and financial analysis involving moderately complex to complex assignments. Prepare, review, and maintain accurate financial records, schedules, reconciliations, and reports. Analyze financial data and identify discrepancies, trends, and issues requiring further review. Prepare and review journal entries, general ledger activity, and account reconciliations. Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities. Support the preparation of financial statements, management reports, and other required financial reporting. Ensure accounting transactions and records comply with applicable policies, procedures, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements. Research and resolve complex accounting and financial reporting issues. Provide accounting guidance and technical support to internal departments. Assist with audits by preparing schedules, documentation, reconciliations, and responses to auditor requests. Review accounting processes and recommend improvements to strengthen accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls. Work independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines. May provide technical guidance or lead direction to other accounting staff.
