We are seeking a detail-oriented Utility Planner to join our engineering and design group. This role focuses on the planning, design, and engineering of overhead and underground electric distribution facilities (4kV through 115kV).
You will be responsible for the full project lifecycle—from initial fielding and data acquisition to preparing Bills of Materials (BOM) and performing quality reviews. This is a dynamic role that requires a balance of technical CAD work, engineering calculations, and active field-site visits.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Planning: Plan overhead and underground transmission/distribution facilities under minimal supervision.
Field Work: Travel 50% of the time in California, Oregon and Nevada locations to acquire field data, working alongside surveying crews and project leads.
Technical Documentation: Prepare pole loading analyses, design sketches, calculations, and construction documents (plan and profiles, structure loadings, equipment specs).
Standards Compliance: Apply client-specific guidelines, NESC standards, and California General Orders (GO95) to all designs.
Project Management: Monitor project schedules, report budget/schedule changes, and identify risks or opportunities for design improvement.
Communication: Liaison between engineers and clients to ensure project requirements are met.
Required Qualifications
Experience: 1+ years of experience in Utility Design (Required).
Technical Skills: 1+ years of experience with CAD software (Required).
Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with NESC standards and/or California General Orders (GO95).
Physical/Travel: Ability to travel 50% of the time. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various outdoor field conditions.
Entry-Level/New Grads: We will consider recent graduates who possess a strong internship or externship background and meet the minimum year requirements in CAD and design.
Legal: Valid U.S. Driver’s License and legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
1+ years of Utility Planning experience.
Experience with Pole Loading software (O-Calc, SPIDACalc, PLS-CADD, or PLS-Pole).
Experience with Distribution Design software (Design Manager/DM, SAP, DPSS, FFE, or Maximo).
Degree or Certificate in Drafting/CAD, or Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering.
Benefits & Compensation:
Travel Support: Per diem paid for all travel.
Benefits Package: 401(k), Health, Vision, and Life Insurance, Paid Time Off (PTO), and Tuition Reimbursement.
Schedule: Standard 8-hour shifts; however, field travel is a core component of the role.
