Position Summary
The Senior Accountant – General Ledger is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the general ledger and supporting accurate financial reporting within a regulated electric utility environment. This role leads key aspects of the month-end close process, ensures compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements, and supports accounting for revenue, capital projects, and utility operations. The ideal candidate has strong general ledger experience and a solid understanding of accounting in a regulated or infrastructure-focused industry.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Close Process
Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and adjusting entries
Perform detailed balance sheet and income statement account reconciliations
Analyze financial variances and provide explanations to management
Maintain accuracy and integrity of the general ledger across multiple accounts
Ensure timely posting of revenue, operating expenses, and capital expenditures
Utility Revenue & Operational Accounting
Support accounting for electric revenue, including billing adjustments and unbilled revenue accruals
Reconcile customer accounts receivable and related revenue accounts
Assist with tracking and accounting for power purchases and energy sales
Support cost allocation processes across departments and service territories
Capital Projects & Fixed Assets
Support accounting for utility infrastructure projects (substations, transmission lines, equipment)
Track capital expenditures and ensure proper capitalization in accordance with company policy
Assist with fixed asset reconciliations and depreciation schedules
Coordinate with engineering and operations teams to ensure accurate project accounting
Regulatory & Compliance Support
Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements
Assist with preparation of regulatory reporting and financial schedules
Support rate case filings and documentation as needed
Maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting
Prepare documentation and respond to internal and external audit requests
Process Improvement & Systems
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls
Support ERP system maintenance, upgrades, and testing
Develop and document accounting procedures
Mentor and review work of staff accountants or accounting support personnel
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
CPA or CPA candidate preferred
Experience
5+ years of progressive accounting experience
Strong general ledger and month-end close experience required
Experience in electric utility, energy, or regulated industry strongly preferred
Experience with capital project accounting and fixed assets
ERP experience required (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or similar)
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
Understanding of regulated utility accounting principles preferred
Excellent reconciliation and analytical skills
Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, financial analysis)
High attention to detail and accuracy
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with operations and engineering teams
