Position Overview
Under minimal supervision, the Special Assets Officer is responsible for managing a portfolio of problem loans, including workout strategies, litigation support, and liquidation processes. This role serves as a lead resource in negotiating complex workout agreements with distressed borrowers across both conventional and government-guaranteed loan portfolios, with a strong emphasis on SBA 7(a) loan structures.
The position works closely with legal counsel to resolve litigation efficiently while minimizing expenses and maximizing recoveries. Additionally, this role supports the management of real estate owned (OREO) properties from acquisition through disposition. This is an in-office position requiring a high level of independence and sound judgment.

Key Responsibilities
• Manage all aspects of an assigned portfolio, including delinquency, foreclosure, litigation, property taxes, asset liquidation, and OREO management
• Monitor and analyze bankruptcy proceedings to protect position and maximize recovery outcomes
• Oversee compliance with servicing requirements for commercial and government-guaranteed loans, including:
o Offers in Compromise
o Litigation Plans
o Liquidation Plans
o Purchase Guarantees
• Negotiate with distressed borrowers to determine optimal workout solutions and preserve loan performance where possible
• Review and risk-rate loans for upgrades, downgrades, impairment, or charge-off status
• Monitor charged-off loans and pursue recovery strategies
• Prepare and maintain watch list, special mention, and classified asset reports
• Ensure adherence to all internal policies and applicable state and federal banking regulations
• Participate in community reinvestment initiatives (minimum annual volunteer hours required)
• Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field preferred, or equivalent experience
• Minimum 7 years of commercial banking experience with a focus on loan workouts
• Strong experience with SBA 7(a) liquidation and repurchase processes
• In-depth knowledge of real estate terms, valuation, and market dynamics
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
