Job Summary

A respected public sector organization in Ventura County is seeking a Senior Government Accountant for a temporary 3 to 7 month assignment supporting fiscal year-end close and the annual audit process. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional with strong governmental accounting, GASB, fund accounting, and audit support experience to make an immediate impact during a critical reporting period.

The Senior Government Accountant will work closely with an experienced leadership team in a collaborative, professional environment. This role is especially attractive for CPA candidates who are seeking qualifying supervised experience under a licensed CPA. The position offers exposure to complex public sector accounting, cross-department coordination, audit deliverables, and year-end financial reporting in a stable and mission-driven government setting.

Key Responsibilities

- Review, prepare, and post complex journal entries in support of monthly and year-end close.
- Perform and oversee general ledger reconciliations, account analysis, and correction of accounting discrepancies.
- Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and Prepared by Client schedules for external auditors.
- Coordinate audit requests and partner with multiple departments to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
- Support fiscal year-end close activities, monthly financial reporting, and annual audit preparation.
- Ensure accounting activities align with Governmental Accounting Standards Board requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

- Pay rate: $50 to $60 per hour.
- Temporary contract assignment, approximately 3 to 7 months.
- Full-time schedule.
- 9/80 work schedule.
- Monday through Thursday with alternating Fridays off.
- Flexible start time between approximately 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM.
- Flexible 30 to 60 minute lunch period.

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Support governmental fiscal year-end close activities and annual audit preparation.
- Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, audit schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate PBC schedules and audit requests across departments.
- Analyze ERP financial data and identify appropriate corrective accounting actions.

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Direct experience in governmental accounting and/or governmental auditing.
- Strong knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board standards.
- Experience working in a city, county, state, or other public sector environment.
- Experience with governmental fund accounting.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and reconciliation analysis.
- Experience extracting and analyzing financial data from ERP systems.
- Approximately 6 to 10 years of accounting experience preferred for this senior-level role.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to meet deadlines during close and audit cycles.
- Professional communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.

Preferred Qualifications

- CPA or CPA candidate.
- Experience working under year-end close and audit deadlines.
- Experience with Workday Financials or a similar ERP system.
- Public sector audit support experience.
