Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant for a contract/temporary opportunity (with the chance to become permanent down the road) in Pittsburgh, PA. This role supports the financial operations of a mission-driven organization in the non-profit space, with a strong focus on nonprofit accounting, grant and contract tracking, financial reporting, and internal controls.

The Senior Accountant will serve as a key financial partner to executive leadership, program directors, and accounting staff. This is a highly visible position for a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys helping leaders understand financial performance, manage grant funding responsibly, and support meaningful community impact.

Key Responsibilities

- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, journal entries, and accurate transaction posting in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Prepare timely financial reports for leadership, including budget-to-actual results, year-to-date performance, grant usage, contract balances, and Board-level reporting support.
- Oversee nonprofit grant and contract accounting, ensuring expenditures align with approved budgets, funding periods, reporting requirements, and compliance expectations.
- Maintain and improve QuickBooks Online structures, including classes, programs, customers, grants, and contracts, while identifying opportunities to streamline accounting workflows.
- Support annual budgeting, forecasting, audit preparation, Form 990 support, compliance filings, cash monitoring, internal controls, and financial policy review.
- Provide financial guidance and training to leadership and program teams regarding budget performance, grant spending, financial reports, and available funding.

Compensation and Benefits

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Oversee nonprofit accounting operations, including close processes, reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and general ledger accuracy.
- Manage grant and contract accounting, including budget tracking, financial reporting, funding compliance, and related documentation.
- Prepare leadership financial packages, budget-to-actual reports, grant usage reports, and Board-level financial reporting support.
- Coordinate audit preparation, Form 990 support, compliance filings, internal controls, and financial process improvements.

- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field required.
- 5 or more years of nonprofit accounting or related financial accounting experience required.
- Significant nonprofit grant management experience required.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial statements, U.S. GAAP, and federal cost principles.
- Hands-on QuickBooks Online experience required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including advanced Excel skills.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills, with the ability to guide accounting staff and collaborate with leadership.
- Excellent written, verbal, technical, and stakeholder communication skills.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

- Master’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field preferred.
- CPA designation preferred.
- Experience supporting nonprofit audits, Form 990 preparation, and grant-funded program financial reporting preferred.
- Experience working with executive leadership, program directors, and Boards of Directors preferred.
