Job Summary Required Qualifications and Skills:
A public sector organization in Downey, CA is seeking a Senior Accountant for a temporary contract assignment supporting the year-end close process. This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional with strong City or municipal government accounting experience and a solid understanding of governmental accounting standards.
The Senior Accountant will work closely with finance leadership and accounting teams to support financial reporting, account reconciliations, long-term debt accounting, capital asset activity, audit preparation, and ACFR-related review. Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the year-end close process, including accounting entries, reconciliations, and financial statement support.
- Analyze and maintain accounting records related to long-term debt, capital assets, depreciation, additions, disposals, and related schedules.
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, adjusting entries, and supporting documentation.
- Review financial statements and schedules for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with governmental accounting standards.
- Support ACFR preparation and review, including research and application of applicable GASB standards.
- Assist with audit requests by gathering documentation, responding to inquiries, and resolving discrepancies.
- Pay range: $35 to $75 per hour.
- Job type: Contract/Temporary to December.
- Location: Downey, CA.
- Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with Fridays off.
- Prior City or municipal government accounting experience.
- 3 to 5 years of senior-level accounting experience, preferably in governmental accounting.
- Strong knowledge of GASB standards and governmental accounting principles.
- Hands-on experience with long-term debt, capital assets, general ledger reconciliations, and year-end close activities.
- Experience reviewing financial statements, supporting schedules, and accounting records for accuracy and completeness.
- Proficiency with accounting and financial systems, along with strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a deadline-driven environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting or reviewing an Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
- Experience working directly with external auditors.
- Experience with a California city or municipality.
