A well-established, family-owned commercial mechanical contractor in Downers Grove, IL is seeking a Project Accountant to join its accounting team on a direct hire basis. This is a strong opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys hands-on project accounting work, especially billing, invoicing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.

The Project Accountant will work closely with project managers, operations teams, and accounting leadership to support the financial administration of commercial construction projects. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and process customer invoices, project billing, and related billing documentation.
- Monitor accounts receivable, follow up on outstanding balances, and help resolve customer billing questions.
- Process accounts payable, review invoices for accuracy, and ensure proper coding to projects and cost categories.
- Coordinate billing details, project financial information, and supporting documentation with project managers and operations teams.
- Maintain accurate project accounting records, including project costs, commitments, and billing status.
- Support the accounting team with additional project-related accounting and administrative responsibilities.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $55,000 to $75,000 per year.
- Job type: Direct hire.
- Location: Downers Grove, IL.
- Manage day-to-day project billing, invoicing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable activity.
- Coordinate project accounting information with project managers and operational teams.
- Track project costs, commitments, billing documentation, and related financial records.
- Resolve billing discrepancies and support accurate financial administration of construction projects.
- 2+ years of accounting, billing, accounts receivable, or accounts payable experience.
- Strong understanding of invoicing, billing processes, and accounts receivable follow-up.
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and comfort working with both accounting and field operations teams.
- Interest in a hands-on accounting role focused on project support rather than CPA-level accounting or traditional month-end close responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Construction accounting or project-based accounting experience.
- Experience supporting commercial construction, mechanical contracting, subcontracting, or related project-driven environments.
- Familiarity with reviewing project invoices, coding costs, tracking commitments, and coordinating billing backup with project managers.
