Job Summary

A well-established mechanical contracting organization in Southeast Wisconsin is seeking a Project Accountant for a direct hire opportunity in Pewaukee, WI. This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys working in a project-based environment and wants to support commercial and industrial construction-related work.

The Project Accountant will help manage the financial administration of projects from setup through closeout, partnering closely with Project Managers, Operations, Payroll, and Accounting. This position offers the chance to build expertise in construction accounting, job costing, billing, revenue support, and project financial reporting while contributing to accurate, timely, and compliant project results.

Key Responsibilities

- Set up and maintain projects, cost codes, contracts, budgets, and change orders in the ERP system.
- Monitor project costs, labor, equipment, subcontractors, committed costs, and other project-related expenses.
- Prepare customer billings, including progress billings, time and material billings, and AIA-style billings as applicable.
- Support job cost analysis, forecasting, profitability reviews, revenue recognition, and work-in-progress reporting.
- Monitor accounts receivable balances, help resolve billing questions, and support collection documentation such as lien waivers and releases.
- Maintain project documentation and support compliance requirements related to contracts, change orders, certificates of insurance, certified payroll, and sales tax documentation.

Compensation and Benefits

- Direct hire opportunity.
- Salary range: $55,000 to $75,000 per year.
- Full-time, non-exempt position.
- Business hours between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Location: Pewaukee, WI.



Required Qualifications and Skills

- Support financial administration of construction projects from initial setup through closeout.
- Manage job cost tracking, project billing, contract documentation, and financial reporting.
- Partner with Project Managers and accounting teams to analyze costs, resolve discrepancies, and support accurate project performance reporting.
- Assist with month-end close activities, revenue recognition, work-in-progress reporting, and forecasting.

- Accounting experience in a project-based, job cost, construction, engineering, or contracting environment.
- Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, billing, and cost coding.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience using an ERP system for project accounting, billing, or job costing.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Operations, Payroll, Accounting, and customers.
- Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

- 3+ years of accounting experience.
- Construction, mechanical contracting, engineering, specialty contracting, or other project-based accounting experience.
- Experience with Viewpoint Spectrum or a similar construction ERP system.
- Familiarity with AIA billing, progress billing, time and material billing, lien waivers, certificates of insurance, certified payroll, and work-in-progress reporting.
