Project Accountant I
Housing Real Estate Development (HRED)
Position Overview
The Project Accountant I provides accounting support to the Housing Real Estate Development (HRED) department for assigned development projects, ensuring all accounting activities are completed accurately and in compliance with established policies and procedures. This role works closely with the Senior Real Estate Accountant and collaborates with the Project Accountant II and the project management team to support construction accounting, loan draws, job cost tracking, intercompany transactions, and audits throughout the project lifecycle.
This position is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional with experience in real estate or construction accounting who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor and record all cash disbursements and cash receipts related to assigned development projects
Maintain the general ledger for all assigned projects
Prepare monthly construction loan draw packages
Prepare weekly check runs for development projects
Create and post journal entries related to assigned projects
Manage month-end close procedures for assigned projects
Update and track project budgets within the accounting system
Reconcile intercompany accounts in coordination with the Senior Real Estate Accountant
Ensure timely payment of property taxes and monthly loan interest
Support year-end audits and prepare accruals as needed
Assist with project close-out and transition to Asset Management
Collaborate with and support the Project Accountant II, including cross-training
Assist the Senior Real Estate Accountant with special projects and ad hoc reporting
Perform additional duties as assigned, based on training and departmental needs
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university
3–5 years of accounting experience in a professional work environment
Experience in real estate development or construction accounting required
Hands-on experience with:
Construction loan draws
Multi-entity and intercompany accounting
Job cost tracking and budget management
Year-end audits
Experience with tax credits and nonprofit affordable housing strongly preferred
Technical Skills
Proficiency with MIP Accounting Software
Strong Excel skills (spreadsheets, reconciliations, reporting)
Experience with SharePoint
High attention to detail with strong organizational and time-management skills
