Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Specialist for a temp-to-hire opportunity in Pasadena, CA within the engineering services industry. Key Responsibilities
- Process weekly payroll, including time entry, error review, paycheck preparation, and direct deposit file processing.
- Prepare union fringe benefit reports, compile payroll data, submit reports, and coordinate related check requests.
- Maintain employee pay, payroll, and fringe benefit information in JDE and HCM systems.
- Respond to payroll questions, EDD inquiries, new hire requests, and payroll-related discrepancies from Human Resources and Accounting.
- Process manual checks, stop payments, garnishments, benefit deductions, payroll corrections, and year-end reporting as needed.
- Reconcile payroll prior to transmission and validate confirmed reports for accuracy and compliance.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Process accurate and timely weekly payroll in an in-house payroll system.
- Prepare payroll reconciliations, fringe benefit reports, garnishments, manual checks, and payroll corrections.
- Maintain payroll data and employee records in JDE, HCM, or similar systems.
- Support payroll compliance, wage and hour requirements, taxation of employer-paid benefits, and year-end reporting.
- 5+ years of payroll experience required.
- 5+ years of data entry experience into an accounting or payroll system required.
- Experience processing payroll through an in-house payroll system, such as Oracle JD Edwards, strongly required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel required.
- Accurate 10-key by touch, with 9,000+ keystrokes preferred and demonstrated high data-entry accuracy.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state wage and hour laws.
- Experience with garnishment calculations, payroll tax considerations, W-2 and W-2c reporting, and unclaimed payroll check compliance.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to research, document, and resolve payroll issues professionally.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain minimal errors in a high-volume payroll environment.
- Strong communication, teamwork, initiative, problem-solving, and willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10,000+ keystrokes by touch with strong accuracy.
- Prior experience preparing union fringe benefit reports.
- Experience supporting payroll in the engineering services, construction, or project-based job cost environment.
- Familiarity with payroll job cost corrections and benefit deduction reporting.
