Payroll & Accounting Specialist

Position Overview
Cherokee Freight Lines is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Payroll & Accounting Specialist to manage payroll processing and support daily accounting operations. This role is critical to ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time while maintaining financial records and compliance with all applicable regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Duties
• Process weekly/biweekly payroll for drivers and administrative staff
• Verify timekeeping records, mileage logs, and deductions
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage laws
• Maintain payroll records and resolve discrepancies
• Handle garnishments, benefits deductions, and tax filings
• Prepare payroll reports for management
Accounting Duties
• Perform accounts payable and receivable functions
• Reconcile bank and credit card statements
• Maintain general ledger and journal entries
• Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes
• Prepare financial reports and support audits
• Monitor cash flow and assist with budgeting
Qualifications
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 2+ years of payroll and/or accounting experience (transportation industry a plus)
• Knowledge of payroll laws and accounting principles
• Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, ADP, or similar systems)
• Strong Excel skills and attention to detail
• Ability to handle confidential information with integrity
Preferred Skills
• Experience with trucking/logistics payroll (mileage-based, per diem, etc.)
• Familiarity with DOT regulations and reporting
• Strong organizational and time-management skills
• Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
