We are seeking a versatile Heavy Equipment Operator with Diesel Mechanic experience to support utilities construction, maintenance, and emergency repair operations. This dual-role position is ideal for someone equally comfortable operating heavy equipment in the field and performing hands-on mechanical diagnostics and repairs to keep machinery safe, reliable, and operational.
Requirements
3–5 years of experience operating heavy equipment and/or performing diesel or heavy equipment maintenance
Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and mechanical systems
Proficiency operating loaders, backhoes, tractors, dozers, and motor graders
Proven mechanical troubleshooting and repair capabilities
Basic computer and mobile device proficiency for service logs and work orders
Ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding tasks
Willingness to participate in emergency on-call rotation
Diesel Mechanic certification or vocational training
Experience in utilities, public works, or water district operations
CDL or ability to obtain one
Welding or fabrication experience
Familiarity working on rented or specialized equipment

Responsibilities
Heavy Equipment Operations
Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, including dozers, motor graders (with sloper blade), loaders, backhoes, rubber-tired tractors, dump trucks, and rented or specialty equipment
Perform excavation, grading, leveling, and earthmoving according to project plans, stakes, and hand signals
Support canal, levee, and utilities infrastructure construction and repair projects
Transport materials and complete multiple passes as needed to achieve precise grade specifications
Diesel & Equipment Maintenance
Conduct preventive maintenance and troubleshoot mechanical issues on diesel-powered and heavy equipment
Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, and hydraulic systems
Perform routine servicing such as oil and filter changes, hose and belt replacement, and leak inspections
Identify safety or performance issues and document maintenance and repair needs
Equipment Setup & Field Support
Attach and remove implements using clevis or wedge pin hitches
Connect PTO shafts, hydraulic lines, belts, and mechanical linkages
Perform daily inspections and routine servicing of assigned equipment
Assist with general field maintenance, including basic site and weed control
Safety & Emergency Response
Follow all safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements
Report hazardous conditions immediately
Participate in safety training and emergency response efforts
