We are seeking an experienced HR Generalist to join a well-established nonprofit organization dedicated to improving community health and supporting individuals impacted by substance use and social inequities. Position Summary
The HR Generalist will support leadership and staff across all areas of Human Resources. This role manages day-to-day HR operations, ensures compliance with California employment laws, and helps foster a positive, equitable, and mission-aligned workplace culture.
This position reports to the Executive Director and supervises an HR Administrator.
Key Responsibilities
Leave Management & Compliance
Oversee FMLA, CFRA, ADA accommodations, disability claims, and workers’ compensation
Ensure compliance with California labor laws and internal policies
Employee Relations & Performance Management
Manage employee relations, investigations, corrective actions, and PIPs
Support performance evaluations and goal-setting processes
Provide guidance to managers on policy application and compliance
Compensation & Benefits
Prepare job descriptions and employment offers
Support salary administration and benefits coordination
Assist with payroll and compensation benchmarking
Training & Development
Develop and deliver employee training programs
Conduct compliance and leadership training sessions
Track employee training and development initiatives
HR Operations & Policy Management
Maintain HR policies and employee handbook updates
Manage HRIS systems and employee records
Support audits, reporting, and regulatory compliance
Contribute to employee engagement and workplace wellness initiatives
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field
5–7 years of overall HR experience, including 3–4 years in a Generalist role
Strong knowledge of California labor laws and employment compliance
Experience in leave administration, employee relations, and performance management
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Preferred:
PHR or SHRM-CP certification
Experience working in a nonprofit, healthcare, or social services organization
Familiarity with HRIS and payroll systems
