Job Opportunity: Accountant I/II
We are currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as an Accountant I/II. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the preparation and maintenance of municipal accounting records and procedures, with tasks varying from moderate complexity at the Accountant I level to more advanced responsibilities at the Accountant II level.
Position Overview:
• Accountant I: Under general supervision, you will perform professional accounting duties related to maintaining financial records, preparing reports, and assisting management with accounting tasks that require a good understanding of accounting principles. This entry-level role involves reviewing, verifying, and analyzing financial data while supporting the preparation of financial reports such as the Comprehensive Annual Finance Report (CAFR). As you gain experience, you will take on increased responsibility and exercise greater independence.
• Accountant II: This journey-level role involves performing a broad range of more complex accounting duties, including preparing financial statements, analyzing revenue and expenditure accounts, and ensuring compliance with governmental accounting standards. You will work independently, exercise sound judgment, and may also provide technical guidance to junior staff. You will also handle tasks such as maintaining debt payment schedules and participating in the investment of funds.
Key Responsibilities:
• Perform accounting tasks including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, reconciliations, and preparation of financial statements.
• Assist with audits, internal controls, and year-end reviews.
• Prepare periodic financial reports for governmental agencies.
• At the Accountant II level, analyze departmental expenditures, coordinate long-term debt payments, and provide functional leadership to staff.
Qualifications:
• A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field is required.
• Accountant I: At least one (1) year of experience in accounting work. Experience in a municipal environment is highly desirable.
• Accountant II: At least two (2) years of professional-level accounting experience, preferably in a public agency or municipal setting.
Knowledge and Skills:
• Accountant I: Knowledge of accounting principles, financial administration, governmental accounting, and proficiency with financial software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, ERP systems).
• Accountant II: In addition to the above, thorough knowledge of governmental accounting, auditing principles, and cost accounting systems. Ability to perform complex data analysis, assist in system improvements, and train staff.
