Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Director of Finance for a direct hire opportunity with a mission-driven nonprofit organization in Bellevue, WA. This senior finance leadership role is ideal for a strategic, hands-on finance professional who wants to help strengthen organizational sustainability, improve financial operations, and support meaningful community impact.

The Director of Finance will oversee financial strategy, accounting operations, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, audit activities, grant accounting, and financial reporting. This position works closely with executive leadership, the Board, finance committee, funding partners, and internal teams to provide clear financial insight and support sound decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead financial planning, annual budgeting, monthly forecasting, cash flow management, and long-range financial analysis to support organizational strategy.
- Oversee accounting operations, financial controls, monthly close, general ledger review, reconciliations, payroll oversight, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, collections, purchasing, and annual reporting.
- Manage grant accounting, funding allocations, restricted and unrestricted grant reporting, government contract compliance, and financial cooperative grant agreement requirements.
- Prepare and communicate financial reports, key performance indicators, budget variance analysis, and strategic recommendations to leadership, the Board, finance committee, partners, and donors.
- Manage audit activities, IRS 990 preparation, state nonprofit filings, State and City B&O tax reporting, compliance requirements, risk assessments, and fiscal policy updates.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff while improving ERP accounting system processes, internal controls, and overall finance department effectiveness.

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Lead nonprofit financial operations, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial reporting.
- Manage grant accounting, government funding compliance, restricted and unrestricted funding allocations, and audit readiness.
- Oversee accounting processes, controls, monthly close, payroll oversight, tax filings, ERP improvements, and staff supervision.

- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
- 10 to 15 years of finance and accounting experience, including audit experience.
- Significant nonprofit finance and operations experience.
- Experience managing an annual budget of at least $3 million.
- Knowledge of government accounting, grants, government revenue contracts, and multiple funding sources.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, regulatory requirements, financial controls, and nonprofit compliance obligations.
- ERP accounting software experience, with the ability to evaluate and improve accounting system processes.
- Ability to prepare financial analysis, board-level reporting, budget variance reviews, cash flow projections, and decision-support materials.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or leading accounting staff.
- Strong relationship management skills with the ability to collaborate with leadership, board members, finance committees, funders, tax authorities, and third-party partners.
- Strategic, proactive, analytical, and collaborative leadership style with a focus on organizational impact, sustainability, and scalability.

Preferred Qualifications

- CPA certification preferred, though equivalent knowledge and experience will be considered.
- Experience with NIST MEP or similar federal grant-funded programs.
- Experience preparing or managing IRS Form 990 documentation.
- Experience supporting finance committee meetings, board reporting, and financial policy development.
- Background in nonprofit organizations with complex funding streams, including government contracts, grants, in-kind support, and donor-related funding.
