About the Role
We are seeking a strategic, detail-driven Director of Finance to lead and strengthen the financial operations of a mission-driven, nonprofit organization. This role is ideal for a finance leader who thrives in hands-on environments, enjoys building scalable processes, and is excited about long-term growth and impact.
The Director of Finance will serve as a key advisor to executive leadership, oversee all accounting and financial reporting functions, and ensure strong compliance, audit readiness, and grant management. This position offers meaningful responsibility, visibility, and room to grow as the organization expands.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Planning & Strategy
Lead annual budgeting and financial forecasting in collaboration with department leaders
Manage cash flow planning to support sustainability and effective resource allocation
Serve as a strategic financial advisor to executive leadership and the finance committee
Financial Reporting & Compliance
Prepare accurate weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership, board, and external stakeholders
Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations
Oversee nonprofit audits, including preparation, coordination, and follow-up on recommendations
Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit best practices
Accounting Operations
Oversee day-to-day accounting activities including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger
Manage monthly close processes and account reconciliations
Monitor vendor contracts, banking relationships, and treasury operations
Supervise and optimize accounting systems to ensure efficiency and data integrity
Cross-Functional Leadership & Process Improvement
Partner with department leaders to monitor budgets, track spending, and provide actionable financial insights
Lead finance process improvements and change management initiatives
Develop and document financial policies and procedures to support transparency and consistency
Promote accountability and continuous improvement across financial operations
Employee Lifecycle & Operational Support
Maintain personnel and compliance records
Oversee required compliance documentation and recommend corrective actions as needed
Manage offboarding processes
Ensure financial data in CRM systems is accurate and fully reconciled with accounting systems
Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Experience & Qualifications
6–10 years of progressive finance or accounting experience
Strong nonprofit experience, including grant funding, foundation reporting, and nonprofit audits
In-depth knowledge of grants, funding sources, and restricted funds
Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills
Exceptional technical proficiency with accounting and financial systems
Expertise in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office; ability to learn additional platforms
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Proven critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
Ability to identify financial risks, inconsistencies, or potential fraud
High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams
Adaptability in a fast-evolving, mission-focused environment
