Job Summary
A mission-driven nonprofit organization in Beverly Hills, CA is seeking a Controller with non-profit experience to lead day-to-day finance and accounting operations. This direct hire opportunity is ideal for a hands-on nonprofit accounting leader who is skilled in financial controls, grant accounting, audit preparation, compliance, and team leadership.
The Controller will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, supporting grant compliance, and guiding a capable accounting team through month-end and year-end close. The ideal candidate will bring strong nonprofit accounting expertise, proven supervisory experience, and the ability to work across departments to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily finance operations, including accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, grants accounting, month-end close, and year-end close activities.
- Prepare and review journal entries, general ledger activity, bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, revenue recognition, expense coding, liabilities, and net asset classifications.
- Manage audit activity, external auditor relationships, financial filings, Single Audit requirements, Form 990 preparation support, and compliance with local, state, federal, and grant reporting requirements.
- Oversee grant accounting and reporting to ensure expenditures align with approved grant budgets and funder requirements.
- Establish, monitor, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, risk management practices, and financial compliance standards.
- Supervise, train, coach, and develop accounting staff while managing workload assignments, performance expectations, and department priorities.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $130,000 to $140,000 per year.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Lead nonprofit accounting operations, including month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit support.
- Oversee grant accounting, grant budget alignment, and timely financial reporting for government and private grants.
- Manage accounting staff, including recruitment, training, coaching, workload planning, and performance management.
- Ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements, vendor filings, sales tax, 1099 deadlines, banking documentation, and applicable audit standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related discipline required.
- Minimum of 5 years of nonprofit accounting experience required.
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted auditing standards and applicable nonprofit, federal, state, local, and programmatic audit requirements.
- Demonstrated experience with grant management and financial reporting required.
- Proven experience leading month-end close and supervising accounting staff.
- Experience working with external auditors on financial filings required.
- Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software required, particularly Sage.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze data, identify patterns and trends, and consolidate information from multiple sources for reporting purposes.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage shifting priorities, and meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced nonprofit finance environment.
- Demonstrated ability to set goals, implement action plans, evaluate results, and support continuous process improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
- CPA or other accounting designation.
- State grant accounting and reporting experience.
- Experience improving nonprofit accounting processes, strengthening internal controls, and supporting organizational risk management.
