An established construction organization in San Marcos, CA is seeking an experienced Controller to lead financial operations and support key administrative functions. This is a direct hire opportunity for a hands-on accounting leader with strong construction accounting expertise, WIP reporting experience, and the ability to provide accurate financial insight to ownership. Required Qualifications and Skills
The Controller will play a critical role in maintaining financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, supporting compliance, and leading accounting and administrative staff. Key Responsibilities
- Oversee full-cycle accounting operations, including AP, AR, payroll, HR-related accounting functions, general ledger activity, and account reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements, along with WIP reporting, job costing, project financial reporting, and ownership analysis.
- Manage construction-specific compliance requirements, including certified payroll, prevailing wage, contractor registrations, insurance compliance, bonding, and escrow accounts.
- Coordinate year-end close, tax preparation, audits, insurance renewals, banking matters, LOC renewals, and Letters of Credit for captive insurance.
- Supervise and support accounting and administrative personnel while maintaining strong internal controls and GAAP compliance.
- Prepare and file applicable tax returns, including Heavy Vehicle, Business Property, and Sales Tax returns.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $90,000 to $125,000 per year, depending on experience.

- Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday.

- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Construction accounting experience is required.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial statement preparation.
- Hands-on experience with WIP reporting and job costing is required.
- Knowledge of certified payroll and prevailing wage requirements.
- Strong Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word skills.
- Experience working with CPAs, banks, bonding companies, and insurance providers.
- Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- General Engineering Contractor or related construction industry experience.
- Foundation for Construction Software experience.
- Experience managing escrow accounts, bonding requests, LOC renewals, insurance audits, and contractor compliance.
- Current Notary Public license or ability to maintain one.
