Job Summary
A well-established construction organization in Murrieta, CA is seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting and financial operations in a highly visible, hands-on leadership role. This direct hire opportunity is ideal for a construction accounting professional who enjoys working closely with ownership, project managers, and operational leaders to improve financial performance, strengthen controls, and support profitable project delivery.
The Controller will oversee core accounting functions while also serving as a strategic financial partner to leadership. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a stable construction environment with supportive leadership, cross-functional teamwork, and visibility across the business. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical construction accounting expertise, sound leadership judgment, and the ability to operate effectively at both the strategic and detailed transactional level.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting and finance functions, including month-end close, year-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting.
- Oversee construction accounting processes, including job costing, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, project profitability analysis, and cost-to-complete reporting.
- Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, billing, general ledger activity, cash flow forecasting, and project cost monitoring.
- Ensure compliance with prevailing wage requirements, certified payroll reporting, subcontractor compliance, labor regulations, bonding requirements, insurance reporting, and audit support.
- Partner with project managers and operations leaders to review budgets, costs, change orders, project performance, and opportunities to improve profitability.
- Develop and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, financial procedures, and process improvements that enhance accuracy, efficiency, and reporting visibility.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $150,000 to $165,000 per year.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Lead accounting and finance operations for a construction organization, including financial reporting, close processes, budgeting, and cash flow forecasting.
- Oversee job costing, WIP reporting, revenue recognition, project financial analysis, and project cost controls.
- Manage prevailing wage compliance, certified payroll, labor cost reporting, subcontractor compliance, and construction billing processes.
- Partner with ownership, project management, and operations leadership to support profitability, internal controls, and operational decision-making.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience within the construction industry.
- Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior-level accounting leader.
- Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, construction financial reporting, and project profitability analysis.
- Experience with prevailing wage requirements, certified payroll reporting, subcontractor compliance, and labor cost management.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience working with accounting or ERP systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work hands-on in the details while providing strategic financial guidance in a fast-paced construction environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting external audits, banking relationships, bonding requirements, and insurance reporting.
- Proven ability to identify and implement accounting process improvements, reporting enhancements, and internal control improvements.
- Background partnering closely with project managers and operational leaders on project budgets, change orders, and cost-to-complete estimates.
