Job Summary

A residential property management organization in Los Angeles, CA is seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting operations for a growing residential property portfolio and development-related activity. This direct hire Controller role is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader with deep residential property accounting experience, strong GAAP knowledge, and advanced Yardi proficiency.

The Controller will manage a team of approximately six accounting professionals while overseeing financial reporting, close processes, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and strategic financial analysis. This is a high-impact leadership opportunity for a finance professional who enjoys building efficient accounting processes, partnering with operations and executive leadership, and supporting sound financial decision-making across a real estate portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of approximately six accounting professionals supporting residential property accounting operations.
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, including general ledger integrity, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial analyses.
- Direct month-end and year-end close processes while ensuring accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial statements.
- Manage annual budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and financial performance analysis for residential properties and development projects.
- Develop, maintain, and improve internal controls, accounting procedures, reporting processes, and system efficiencies.
- Coordinate annual audits and collaborate with external auditors, tax professionals, property management, operations, and executive leadership.

Compensation and Benefits

- Direct hire opportunity.
- Salary range: $140,000 to $200,000 per year, depending on experience.

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Lead accounting operations for a residential property management portfolio.
- Manage financial reporting, month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
- Supervise and develop a team of accounting professionals.
- Serve as a key accounting systems resource with a strong focus on Yardi.

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Significant experience in residential property management, real estate, or property development accounting.
- Prior experience managing accounting staff and overseeing departmental accounting operations.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and close processes.
- Advanced proficiency with Yardi software is required.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to partner effectively with executive leadership, operations, property management, auditors, and tax professionals.

Preferred Qualifications

- CPA designation preferred.
- Experience improving accounting processes, reporting capabilities, internal controls, and system workflows within a real estate or property management environment.
