Controller – Construction Accounting
Overview
A well-established construction company is seeking a hands-on Controller to oversee accounting operations across multiple entities and active construction projects. This role will partner closely with leadership to provide accurate financial reporting, job cost analysis, forecasting, and compliance oversight while leading and developing the accounting team.
The ideal candidate is a strong construction accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and brings both technical accounting expertise and leadership experience.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Operations
Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for multiple entities
Prepare and analyze financial statements, management reports, and cash flow reporting
Develop and manage budgets, forecasting, and financial planning processes
Perform gross margin and job cost analysis to identify discrepancies between ERP systems and accounting records
Analyze and support transaction activity within Odoo, ABIS, and Adjutant, ensuring accuracy and resolving GL or job cost discrepancies
Maintain fixed asset schedules, including additions, disposals, and depreciation
Manage loan schedules, interest payments, and banking activity
Post and reconcile intercompany transactions, shared expenses, and bank transfers across multiple business units
Perform full general ledger reconciliations and review journal entries for accuracy
Review and reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and related fees
Oversee AP and AR aging reports, ensuring timely collections and vendor payments
Review customer credit applications and monitor credit exposure
Prepare weekly AR/AP cash forecast reporting for leadership
Support audits, tax compliance, and special financial projects
Payroll & Compliance
Serve as Paychex Payroll Administrator
Review payroll variance reports and analyze labor cost impacts on projects
Ensure compliance with financial regulations, payroll reporting, subcontractor reporting, and 1099 requirements
Prepare financial reporting packages for external auditors, CPA firms, banks, and government agencies
Act as a primary contact for auditors, CPA firms, and compliance-related reporting
Leadership & Team Management
Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team
Cross-train staff and maintain/update accounting SOPs and internal procedures
Provide backup support for AP and AR functions as needed
Participate in management and operational meetings
Ensure strong internal controls and adherence to construction accounting best practices
Serve as Banking System Administrator
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
5+ years of Controller or senior-level accounting experience within the construction industry
Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and multi-entity accounting
Experience managing budgets, forecasting, and financial planning processes
Experience handling intercompany accounting and shared expenses across multiple business units
Direct experience working with external auditors, CPA firms, banks, and compliance reporting
Proficiency in ERP/accounting systems such as Odoo, ABIS, Adjutant, or similar platforms
Strong knowledge of payroll processes and payroll systems, including Paychex preferred
Advanced Excel and financial reporting skills
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities
Preferred Experience
Construction, subcontracting, or project-based accounting environment
Multi-entity and multi-location operations
Cash flow forecasting and banking relationship management
Process improvement and SOP development
Experience supporting ownership and executive leadership teams
