Assistant Controller (Construction & Project Accounting)

Location: In-office – Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316
Job Type: Full-time, Direct Hire

Bonus: Up to 20% annual performance bonus

We are seeking a highly skilled Assistant Controller to join a fast-growing commercial construction and renewable energy organization. This role has been elevated from Accounting Manager due to business growth and requires a stronger leader with deep technical accounting expertise and proven experience managing accounting operations in a complex, high-revenue environment.

This is a high-visibility leadership role interacting regularly with C-suite executives and company ownership. The ideal candidate is polished, confident, and experienced in scaling accounting functions within construction or project-based industries.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

Lead, mentor, and develop accounting teams across GL, AP/AR, and payroll
Establish performance standards and build a scalable accounting structure
Drive accountability, efficiency, and a high-performance culture

Financial Reporting & Close

Own month-end and year-end close processes ensuring accuracy and timeliness
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
Develop executive-level reporting packages

Construction & Project Accounting

Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and job costing analysis
Monitor backlog, margins, and project financial performance
Ensure accurate ASC 606 revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion)
Manage construction billing processes including AIA billing, lien waivers, and retainage

Cash Flow & Financial Planning

Partner with leadership on cash flow forecasting and liquidity management
Support budgeting and forecasting in collaboration with FP&A and leadership teams
Monitor working capital and project-level cash performance

Controls, Compliance & Audit

Strengthen internal controls and accounting policies
Act as liaison for external auditors, tax advisors, and lenders
Ensure multi-state tax compliance (sales & use tax)
Support readiness for audits, financing, or potential transactions

Systems & Process Improvement

Drive ERP optimization and accounting system enhancements (Sage, Procore, NetSuite, etc.)
Identify automation and process improvement opportunities
Standardize accounting workflows for scalability

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience
5+ years of leadership experience managing accounting teams
Strong construction or project-based accounting background required

Deep expertise in:
Job costing and WIP reporting
Construction billing (AIA, retainage, lien waivers)
ASC 606 revenue recognition
Experience in high-growth or large-scale environments
Proficiency with ERP systems (Sage 300, Procore, NetSuite, or similar)
Advanced Excel and strong analytical skills
