Job Summary
A growing electrical construction organization is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to support branch-level financial operations in Beltsville, MD. This is a direct hire, on-site opportunity for a hands-on accounting professional with strong construction accounting expertise, particularly in payroll, accounts receivable, AIA billing, job costing, and project accounting.
The Assistant Controller will work closely with the Branch Controller, Project Managers, and corporate finance teams to maintain accurate financial reporting, support project performance, and strengthen financial controls. Key Responsibilities
- Manage construction payroll processes, including certified payroll, prevailing wage, multi-jurisdictional payroll, and union payroll requirements.
- Oversee accounts receivable functions, including AIA billing, change orders, collections support, and customer billing accuracy.
- Perform job cost accounting, budget versus actual analysis, project financial review, and reporting for branch operations.
- Support month-end close activities, reconciliations, accruals, financial reporting, and internal control processes.
- Partner with Project Managers and corporate finance teams to review project performance, resolve accounting issues, and support operational decision-making.
- Maintain accurate records in construction accounting systems and ensure compliance with company policies and contract requirements.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $110,000 to $115,000 per year, depending on experience.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Manage branch-level financial operations for payroll, accounts receivable, project accounting, and month-end close.
- Support construction project accounting processes, including AIA billing, job costing, change orders, and budget versus actual analysis.
- Partner with Project Managers and finance leadership to maintain accurate project financials and strong internal controls.
- Process complex construction payroll, including certified payroll, prevailing wage, union payroll, and multi-jurisdictional requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
- 8 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience is required.
- Strong construction accounting experience is required, preferably within electrical contracting, MEP, or general contracting.
- Significant experience with construction payroll, certified payroll, prevailing wage, multi-jurisdictional payroll, and union environments is required.
- Experience with IBEW payroll environments is strongly relevant.
- Strong accounts receivable and project accounting experience, including AIA billing, change orders, job costing, and financial analysis.
- Experience with Spectrum ERP or similar construction accounting systems such as Viewpoint, Procore financial systems, or Sage 300.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in a branch-level environment while collaborating effectively with project and corporate finance teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as an Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, or similar accounting leadership role within construction.
- Electrical contracting or MEP industry experience is highly preferred.
- Hands-on Spectrum ERP experience is highly preferred.
- Experience supporting branch operations for a commercial, residential, or specialty construction contractor.
- Strong understanding of financial controls, project profitability, and construction work-in-progress reporting.
