Assistant Controller – Construction Industry

About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our growing construction company. This role supports the Controller and executive team in managing the company’s financial operations with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and continuous process improvement. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in construction accounting, prevailing wage projects, and advanced Excel analytics.

Key Responsibilities:

Support all accounting functions including general ledger, job costing, payroll, and month-end close.

Prepare, review, and reconcile financial statements, journal entries, and project cost reports.

Manage and ensure compliance for prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting across multiple projects.

Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis to support operational decisions.

Maintain internal controls and support year-end audits and financial reviews.

Reconcile bank, credit card, and intercompany accounts on a regular basis.

Develop and maintain advanced Excel models for data analysis, project tracking, and variance reporting.

Collaborate with project managers and operations teams to ensure accurate billing, cost allocation, and revenue recognition.

Identify opportunities for automation and process improvement within accounting systems.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or progress toward CPA a plus).

4+ years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction industry.

Strong understanding of prevailing wage compliance, job costing, and project-based accounting.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, macros, data modeling).

Experience with QuickBooks, Viewpoint, Sage 300 Construction, or similar accounting software preferred.

Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Strong communication and collaboration skills across departments.
