Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Accountant for a direct hire opportunity in San Francisco, CA within the government and public sector space. This role is ideal for an accounting professional with strong full cycle accounting experience, governmental accounting knowledge, and a commitment to accurate financial reporting.

The Accountant will support accounting operations across multiple divisions, prepare journal entries, reconcile accounts, assist with audits, and help ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB standards, public sector reporting requirements, and internal financial policies. Key Responsibilities

- Maintain accounting records for multiple divisions, including administration, development, and operations.
- Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries, including accruals, allocations, cash activity, capital assets, debt service, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts and subsidiary ledgers, resolving discrepancies related to invoices, purchase orders, encumbrances, and retention.
- Review financial activity across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, inventory, and capital assets for accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare monthly financial reports and assist with financial statement production, audits, physical inventories, and cash audits.
- Ensure compliance with GASB standards, GAAP, federal and state regulations, governmental reporting requirements, and internal financial policies.

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Maintain full cycle accounting records and support accurate financial reporting.
- Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and monthly financial reports.
- Support internal and external audits, compliance reviews, and governmental reporting.
- Review accounting activity across A/P, A/R, payroll, inventory, and capital assets.

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related discipline, or additional recent qualifying experience substituted on a year-for-year basis in lieu of a degree.
- At least four years of progressive full cycle accounting or auditing experience involving intermediate complexity.
- Proficiency in governmental accounting, GAAP, GASB standards, and accounting cycles.
- Experience reconciling general ledger accounts, subsidiary ledgers, invoices, purchase orders, encumbrances, and related accounting activity.
- Ability to prepare accurate journal entries, financial reports, documentation, and accounting procedures.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to respond to internal and external inquiries and explain accounting procedures to staff, auditors, and outside agencies.
- Ability to work in a typical office setting, use a computer and standard office equipment, read printed and digital materials, communicate by phone and in person, and travel to district facilities as needed.
- Regular, dependable attendance and consistent performance are required.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in a public transportation agency or public sector agency.
- Participation in the Certified Public Accountant licensure process.
- Familiarity with governmental reporting requirements such as NTD, FHWA, and State Controller’s Office reporting.
- Experience supporting financial, compliance, performance, physical inventory, and cash audits.
