A Utilities Technician is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing utility systems, including electrical, water, gas, and HVAC infrastructure, to ensure safe and reliable service. They monitor system performance, perform routine inspections, troubleshoot issues, and implement corrective actions as needed. The role involves documenting maintenance activities, coordinating with operations and engineering teams, and adhering to safety and regulatory standards. Utilities Technicians help maintain uninterrupted utility services, support operational efficiency, and ensure compliance with industry regulations. Strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and attention to safety are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Operate, maintain, and repair utility systems, including electrical, water, gas, HVAC, and wastewater systems
  • Monitor system performance and conduct routine inspections to ensure efficient and reliable operation
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to restore service
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and system performance metrics
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to plan and execute utility projects
  • Respond promptly to emergency service calls and outages, following established safety procedures
  • Assist in the installation, calibration, and commissioning of new utility equipment and systems
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, safety standards, and company policies
  • Support preventive maintenance programs to extend the life of utility equipment and minimize downtime
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff or operators on proper system operation and safety practices

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or associate degree in utilities, electrical, mechanical, or related field preferred
  • Experience: 2–5 years of experience in utility system operation, maintenance, or technical support
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical, water, gas, or HVAC systems
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot complex utility issues and implement effective solutions
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency in monitoring system performance and interpreting operational data
  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy in maintenance, documentation, and compliance activities
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of workplace safety procedures, lockout/tagout, and regulatory standards
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written skills for coordinating with teams, management, and external vendors
