Short Description:

A Sheet Metal Worker is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and installing sheet metal products and components used in construction, HVAC, or industrial applications. They measure, cut, bend, and join metal pieces according to specifications, blueprints, or work orders. The role involves inspecting finished work, troubleshooting fit or alignment issues, and collaborating with construction or production teams to ensure quality and efficiency. Sheet Metal Workers help ensure durable, precise, and safe metal installations. Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and knowledge of metalworking techniques are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Measure, cut, bend, and assemble sheet metal components according to blueprints, drawings, and specifications
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and machinery such as shears, brakes, and rollers to fabricate metal parts
  • Install, maintain, and repair ductwork, roofing, siding, and other metal structures in residential, commercial, or industrial settings
  • Inspect finished products for accuracy, quality, and compliance with safety standards
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and other tradespeople to ensure project specifications are met
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and layout plans to guide fabrication and installation
  • Apply welding, soldering, or fastening techniques to join metal components when required
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and safe condition
  • Follow safety protocols, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to OSHA regulations
  • Assist in training apprentices or junior workers in sheet metal techniques and safety procedures

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training or apprenticeship in sheet metal work preferred
  • Experience: 2–5 years of experience in sheet metal fabrication, installation, or maintenance
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency with sheet metal tools, machinery, and fabrication techniques
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications accurately
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in measurements, cutting, and assembly of metal components
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot fabrication or installation issues effectively
  • Physical Stamina: Capable of standing, bending, lifting, and working in varied environments for extended periods
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of workplace safety practices, PPE usage, and OSHA compliance
