Short Description:

A Process Plant Operator is responsible for monitoring and controlling industrial processes to ensure the efficient and safe production of materials or products. They operate equipment, adjust process parameters, and perform routine inspections to maintain optimal system performance. The role involves troubleshooting issues, maintaining accurate operational records, and collaborating with engineering and maintenance teams to support continuous improvement. Process Plant Operators help ensure production targets are met while adhering to safety and regulatory standards. Strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Operate and monitor equipment, machinery, and control systems within a process plant to ensure safe and efficient production
  • Adjust process controls, valves, and settings to maintain product quality and meet production targets
  • Conduct routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting of plant equipment
  • Record operational data, including production rates, equipment performance, and process variables, in logs or digital systems
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality regulations during all plant operations
  • Collaborate with maintenance, engineering, and quality teams to resolve equipment or process issues
  • Participate in start-up, shutdown, and emergency procedures for plant operations
  • Assist in implementing process improvements, cost-saving initiatives, and operational efficiencies
  • Respond to alarms, abnormal conditions, or equipment malfunctions to minimize downtime
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including proper handling of hazardous materials

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or associate degree in process technology, chemical engineering, or related field preferred
  • Experience: 1–5 years of experience in process plant operations or industrial manufacturing
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of plant processes, equipment operation, and control systems
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot equipment and process issues quickly and effectively
  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy in monitoring process parameters, recording data, and maintaining compliance
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazardous material handling, and emergency procedures
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written skills for reporting issues and coordinating with teams
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing for long periods and operating heavy machinery
