Short Description:

A Pit Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations in a mining or quarry pit to ensure safe, efficient, and productive material extraction. They manage personnel, coordinate equipment use, monitor production targets, and enforce safety and regulatory compliance. The role involves planning work schedules, addressing operational challenges, and collaborating with engineering and management teams to optimize pit performance. Pit Supervisors help maintain operational efficiency, workforce safety, and adherence to mining standards. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily operations of the mining pit, ensuring production targets and safety standards are met
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of equipment operators, laborers, and support staff within the pit
  • Monitor compliance with safety regulations, company policies, and environmental standards, implementing corrective actions as needed
  • Inspect equipment, machinery, and work areas to ensure proper operation and maintenance
  • Plan and schedule mining activities, including drilling, blasting, hauling, and material handling
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate pit personnel to ensure skill development and adherence to procedures
  • Maintain accurate records of production, equipment usage, and operational incidents
  • Collaborate with engineers, geologists, and other technical staff to optimize workflow and mine planning
  • Manage inventory of tools, explosives, and materials required for pit operations
  • Respond to emergencies or operational disruptions, coordinating recovery efforts and ensuring team safety

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in mining, heavy equipment operation, or related field preferred
  • Experience: 5–10 years of mining experience, including supervisory or leadership roles in pit operations
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mining equipment, pit operations, and extraction techniques
  • Leadership: Ability to manage, train, and motivate a team effectively under challenging conditions
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify operational issues and implement practical solutions quickly
  • Safety Awareness: In-depth knowledge of mining safety standards, OSHA regulations, and emergency procedures
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written skills for directing crews and reporting to management
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, and maintain production efficiency
