Short Description:

A Metallurgical Technician is responsible for analyzing, testing, and evaluating metals and alloys to support quality control, research, and production processes. They prepare samples, conduct laboratory experiments, and use specialized equipment to assess material properties such as hardness, strength, and corrosion resistance. The role involves documenting results, interpreting data, and collaborating with engineers and production teams to improve material performance and manufacturing processes. Metallurgical Technicians help ensure product quality, consistency, and compliance with industry standards. Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Conduct tests and analyses on metals and alloys to determine chemical composition, mechanical properties, and performance characteristics
  • Prepare metallographic samples, including cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching for microscopic examination
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as microscopes, spectrometers, hardness testers, and tensile testing machines
  • Record and interpret test results, providing accurate data for engineers, quality control, and production teams
  • Collaborate with engineers and materials scientists to support research, development, and failure analysis projects
  • Monitor production processes to ensure metallurgical quality and adherence to specifications
  • Assist in developing and implementing quality control procedures and material testing protocols
  • Maintain laboratory safety standards, including proper handling of chemicals, metals, and hazardous equipment
  • Troubleshoot laboratory equipment issues and perform routine maintenance to ensure accurate testing
  • Prepare technical reports, charts, and summaries to communicate findings to internal teams and management

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Technology, Materials Science, or related field preferred
  • Experience: 1–3 years of experience in metallurgical testing, materials analysis, or laboratory operations
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of metallurgy, material properties, testing techniques, and laboratory equipment
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret test data, identify material defects, and provide actionable insights
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in sample preparation, testing procedures, and documentation
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot testing issues and support root-cause failure analysis
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, chemical handling, and equipment operation
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written skills for documenting results and collaborating with engineers and production team
