Short Description:

An Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy machinery and equipment, such as loaders, excavators, or forklifts, to support construction, manufacturing, or material handling activities. They monitor equipment performance, perform basic maintenance, and follow operational and safety procedures to ensure efficient workflow. The role involves coordinating with team members, interpreting work orders or site plans, and maintaining accurate records of equipment use. Equipment Operators help ensure projects and operations are completed safely, on time, and according to specifications. Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to safety, and operational skill are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Operate heavy machinery and equipment, such as forklifts, bulldozers, excavators, and loaders, safely and efficiently
  • Conduct pre-operation inspections to ensure equipment is in proper working condition
  • Perform routine maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, and minor repairs, to maximize equipment longevity
  • Follow project plans, site instructions, and safety protocols to complete assigned tasks accurately
  • Transport materials, products, or debris to designated locations on construction or industrial sites
  • Monitor equipment performance and report malfunctions or safety concerns to supervisors
  • Collaborate with site personnel, engineers, and other operators to optimize workflow and productivity
  • Maintain detailed records of equipment usage, maintenance, and inspections
  • Adhere to company policies, OSHA standards, and regulatory requirements for safe equipment operation
  • Assist in the setup, relocation, and storage of machinery and equipment as needed

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical training in equipment operation preferred
  • Experience: 2–5 years of experience operating heavy machinery in construction, industrial, or similar environments
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of operating and maintaining various types of heavy equipment
  • Safety Awareness: Strong understanding of workplace safety practices, lockout/tagout procedures, and regulatory compliance
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot minor equipment issues and make operational adjustments
  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy in equipment operation, inspections, and recordkeeping
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to handle physically demanding work, including lifting, standing, and operating equipment for extended periods
  • Communication: Effective verbal skills for coordinating with supervisors, team members, and other site personnel
