Short Description:

A Drill Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining drilling equipment to extract materials or create boreholes in mining, construction, or industrial settings. They monitor equipment performance, adjust drilling parameters, and ensure operations are conducted safely and efficiently. The role involves performing routine maintenance, inspecting drill components, and coordinating with team members to achieve production goals. Drill Operators help maintain continuous, safe, and effective drilling operations. Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Operate drilling equipment safely and efficiently for mining, construction, or geotechnical projects
  • Set up, calibrate, and adjust drill rigs and associated machinery according to project specifications
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal equipment performance
  • Monitor drilling operations to maintain proper depth, angle, and alignment, ensuring accuracy and quality of work
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues with drilling equipment and perform minor repairs as needed
  • Record drilling data, including depths, material types, and operational conditions, for project documentation
  • Follow safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures and personal protective equipment requirements
  • Collaborate with site supervisors, engineers, and other crew members to optimize drilling operations and resolve issues
  • Assist in the transportation, setup, and dismantling of drill rigs and equipment at project sites
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure all tools and equipment are stored properly

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in heavy equipment operation preferred
  • Experience: 2–5 years of experience operating drill rigs or similar heavy equipment
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems used in drilling operations
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and implement practical solutions
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of workplace safety regulations, drilling protocols, and emergency procedures
  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy in operating drills, recording data, and maintaining equipment
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, and working in varying environmental conditions
