Short Description:

A Sustainability Manager is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that promote environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices across an organization. They assess operations to identify opportunities for reducing waste, energy use, and environmental impact while ensuring compliance with sustainability regulations and standards. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, managing sustainability initiatives, and reporting on performance metrics and goals. Sustainability Managers help align environmental objectives with business strategy to drive long-term value and corporate responsibility. Strong analytical, project management, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee sustainability strategies and programs that align with organizational goals and regulatory requirements
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments and audits to identify opportunities for waste reduction, energy efficiency, and resource conservation
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and supply chain teams to integrate sustainable practices into daily business operations and project designs
  • Track and analyze sustainability performance metrics, including carbon footprint, water usage, and waste diversion rates
  • Research and evaluate sustainable technologies, materials, and processes to support innovation and continuous improvement
  • Prepare reports, dashboards, and presentations to communicate progress toward corporate sustainability targets and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, as well as corporate sustainability standards and certifications (e.g., LEED, ISO 14001)
  • Lead or support initiatives focused on renewable energy adoption, emissions reduction, and circular economy practices
  • Partner with stakeholders and community organizations to promote sustainability awareness and engagement
  • Provide training and guidance to employees and management on environmental responsibility and sustainability best practices

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred
  • Experience: 5–8 years of experience in sustainability management, environmental compliance, or corporate responsibility programs
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of sustainability frameworks, carbon accounting, and life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency in data collection, performance analysis, and reporting using sustainability metrics and KPIs
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with environmental regulations, ESG reporting standards, and certification systems (e.g., GRI, CDP, LEED)
  • Project Management: Ability to plan and execute multi-department sustainability projects within scope, schedule, and budget
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder engagement, reporting, and advocacy
  • Leadership: Proven ability to influence organizational change and foster a culture of environmental responsibility across teams
