Short Description:

A Senior Construction Estimator is responsible for leading the preparation of detailed cost estimates for construction projects, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness in bids and proposals. They analyze blueprints, specifications, and project requirements to determine labor, material, and equipment costs. The role involves mentoring junior estimators, coordinating with project managers and subcontractors, and identifying cost-saving opportunities. Senior Construction Estimators play a key role in supporting strategic decision-making and maintaining profitability. Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for construction projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs
  • Review architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and other project documentation to determine scope and requirements
  • Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate bids from subcontractors and suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and compliance with project needs
  • Develop and maintain cost databases, unit pricing, and historical data to improve estimating accuracy and efficiency
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to clarify requirements, resolve discrepancies, and define project deliverables
  • Analyze project risks, value engineering options, and alternative materials or methods to optimize cost and performance
  • Prepare bid proposals, cost summaries, and supporting documentation for client review and management approval
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and design reviews to assess project conditions and constraints
  • Track project budgets, monitor changes, and assist with change order pricing throughout the project lifecycle
  • Mentor junior estimators by providing guidance on estimating methods, best practices, and use of estimating software

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or a related field required
  • Experience: 7–10 years of experience in construction estimating, with a focus on commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects
  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, building codes, and industry standards
  • Analytical Skills: Advanced ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documents
  • Software Proficiency: Expertise with estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Sage Estimating, ProEst, or CostX) and Microsoft Excel
  • Attention to Detail: High accuracy in cost analysis, quantity takeoffs, and bid preparation
  • Negotiation Skills: Proven ability to engage with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive and reliable pricing
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing proposals and collaborating with clients and teams
