Short Description:

A Plumbing Technician is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. They diagnose issues, replace or repair fixtures and piping, and ensure systems meet safety and building code standards. The role involves reading blueprints, using specialized tools, and responding to service calls efficiently and professionally. Plumbing Technicians often interact directly with customers to explain work performed and provide preventive maintenance advice. Strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and repair residential, commercial, and industrial plumbing systems including pipes, fixtures, and water or gas lines
  • Inspect plumbing systems to identify leaks, blockages, corrosion, or other issues requiring repair or replacement
  • Interpret blueprints, building codes, and schematics to plan and execute plumbing layouts and installations
  • Assemble, fit, and secure pipes using proper materials and techniques such as soldering, threading, and welding
  • Install and test plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, water heaters, and valves for proper operation and code compliance
  • Perform preventive maintenance and routine inspections to ensure systems function efficiently and safely
  • Diagnose issues with water pressure, drainage, or temperature control and recommend corrective solutions
  • Collaborate with contractors, electricians, and building inspectors to coordinate installation or remodeling projects
  • Maintain detailed service records, including parts used, work performed, and system performance results
  • Adhere to safety regulations and environmental standards, including proper handling of hazardous materials and confined space protocols

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a plumbing trade school or apprenticeship program preferred
  • Experience: 2–5 years of experience in plumbing installation, maintenance, or repair
  • Licensing: State or local plumbing license and backflow prevention certification may be required
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of water supply, drainage, venting systems, and applicable building codes
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and troubleshoot plumbing issues efficiently and accurately
  • Tools & Equipment: Skilled in using pipe cutters, threading machines, soldering tools, pressure gauges, and diagnostic equipment
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy equipment, work in tight spaces, and perform tasks in various weather conditions
  • Communication: Clear and professional communication with clients, contractors, and supervisors to ensure project accuracy and customer satisfaction
