Short Description:

An HVAC Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. They diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, perform system testing, and ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently. The role includes reading blueprints and technical diagrams, performing routine maintenance, and recommending system upgrades or energy-efficient solutions. HVAC Technicians often work directly with customers to explain repairs and preventive care. Strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and attention to safety are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure systems operate safely and efficiently
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant-related issues using gauges, meters, and diagnostic equipment
  • Replace or repair malfunctioning components such as compressors, motors, thermostats, or fans
  • Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications to plan installations or troubleshoot issues
  • Calibrate system controls, test performance, and verify compliance with manufacturer standards and local codes
  • Recover, recharge, and properly handle refrigerants in accordance with EPA regulations
  • Document service calls, maintenance activities, and parts usage in electronic or written service logs
  • Communicate with customers to explain repair needs, maintenance recommendations, and system operation
  • Ensure all work adheres to safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an HVAC technical training program or apprenticeship preferred
  • Certification: EPA Section 608 certification required; NATE or HVAC Excellence certification a plus
  • Experience: 2–5 years of experience in HVAC installation, service, or repair
  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of electrical circuits, refrigeration cycles, and system diagnostics
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and correct complex HVAC issues efficiently and accurately
  • Tools & Equipment: Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and testing instruments such as multimeters and pressure gauges
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy equipment, work in confined spaces, and tolerate varying environmental conditions
  • Customer Service: Professional communication skills and ability to interact courteously with clients and team members
