Short Description:

A Field Service Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing equipment or systems at customer sites. They troubleshoot technical issues, perform diagnostics, and ensure that machinery or products are operating safely and efficiently. The role involves travel to various locations, detailed recordkeeping of service activities, and communication with customers to explain work performed and recommend preventive maintenance. Field Service Technicians act as the on-site representatives of their company, providing professional, reliable technical support. Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and customer service orientation are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, and service field-based equipment or machinery at client sites according to manufacturer or company specifications
  • Conduct routine inspections, calibration, and preventive maintenance to ensure systems operate efficiently and reliably
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software issues using diagnostic tools, schematics, and manuals
  • Replace defective components, reassemble equipment, and verify proper operation following repairs
  • Document service activities, repair outcomes, and parts usage in work orders or digital reporting systems
  • Provide on-site customer support, including system operation guidance and minor training for users or operators
  • Coordinate with engineering, logistics, and technical support teams to resolve complex service issues or schedule follow-up visits
  • Maintain a well-organized inventory of tools, spare parts, and consumables required for field assignments
  • Adhere to safety protocols, regulatory standards, and company policies while performing field operations
  • Travel regularly to customer locations, sometimes on short notice, to respond to service calls or scheduled maintenance visits

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s degree in electronics, mechanical engineering technology, or a related technical field preferred; equivalent experience accepted
  • Experience: 2–5 years of hands-on experience in equipment installation, field service, or maintenance
  • Technical Skills: Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics
  • Problem-Solving: Proven ability to identify, analyze, and resolve technical problems independently in the field
  • Tools & Equipment: Skilled in using hand tools, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and diagnostic software
  • Communication: Clear communication and customer service skills for interacting with clients and team members
  • Organization: Ability to manage schedules, prioritize service calls, and complete documentation accurately
  • Physical Requirements: Capable of lifting moderate equipment loads and working in varying environments, including industrial or outdoor settings
