Short Description:

An Electrical Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. They read blueprints and technical diagrams, perform wiring and circuitry work, and troubleshoot electrical issues to ensure systems operate safely and efficiently. Electrical Technicians also test components, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure compliance with electrical codes and safety regulations. Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of electrical systems and tools are essential for success in this role.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, equipment, and components in industrial, commercial, or residential settings
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical diagrams, and schematics to determine wiring layouts and specifications
  • Inspect electrical systems and components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for repair and ensure compliance with safety codes
  • Test electrical circuits and equipment using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic tools
  • Assemble, install, and connect electrical wiring, switches, circuit breakers, and control systems
  • Perform preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and extend the life of electrical systems
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning systems, diagnose issues, and replace faulty components as necessary
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other technicians on electrical installations and upgrades
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection reports, and repair documentation
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and electrical codes (e.g., NEC standards)

Skills / Requirements / Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s degree or technical diploma in electrical technology, electronics, or a related field preferred
  • Experience: 2–5 years of experience in electrical maintenance, installation, or repair
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of electrical systems, wiring, and control circuits
  • Certifications: Journeyman or Electrician’s license may be required depending on jurisdiction; OSHA certification a plus
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues efficiently and safely
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in performing installations, repairs, and safety inspections
  • Tools & Equipment: Proficiency in using electrical testing devices, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment
  • Communication: Strong teamwork and communication skills for coordinating with supervisors, engineers, and clients
