I'm serious. This is sucky beyond the dicitonary defintion of "sucky."
I recently graduated from college with a BA degree in Psychology. Yeah, I know that there's not many career opportunities for a BA in Psych. I mean, h*ll.
I've put in applications all over the place for menial jobs, jobs like typing and secretary jobs and things.
I'm going to have to start paying off my student loans in a month. I thought I had a "sure thing" a week ago, but that fell through.
I just felt like venting. |

Sometimes we all need to vent. I would however caution you against thinking of secretarial jobs as menial.
These are critical jobs within an organization that require a great deal of professionalism and skill. Often they require a certain amount of experience as well. It's not clear from your posting whether you have that experience or not. If you don't, then you're asking somebody to take a big chance on you and in that situation attitude and "likeability" will be an even more crucial components.
I'm sorry to hear things aren't going smoothly for you. Sometimes student loans can be deferred -- although obviously it would be better if something came through for you so that you could start paying them off.
Good luck, and I hope things start looking brighter for you. |

| Excuse me, secretarial work is not "menial"... For some of us, it pays the bills, and keeps our heads above water. And without secretaries, offices would probably go under... |

| I understand the first guys concerns about his degrees and their affect on his career. I have graduated twice in the last six years and still have not been able to get into a "professional job". It puzzles me as to how some people make an easy transition into their careers, while others struggle to just get a job. I personally do not feel that a certain job is menial. Every person has their own expectations and goals when it comes to jobs and careers. I just what to tell the first guy not to give up and keep pressing forward. I know how you feel. I have two bachelors and a masters and I am still looking for my fit. To the young lady who commented last. Keep doing what puts food on your table and know that you are appreciated. |

i would have to chime in with the other posters about secretarial work being menial. this position, just like all other administrative positions are the building blocks and infrastructure of any organization. without them, the organization could and probably would crumble.
as for your frustration, i can completey empathize as well as sympathize. i graduated with a MA in Organizational Management 3 years ago and have yet to secure any position that is directly related to my degree. it is frustrating, that is true.
as for your student loans, you can get an unemployment deferrment or forbearance for a year from your loan servicing company. contact them so they can get that going for you - that will alleviate the payments for now.
good luck to you - have faith and understand that things happen when they are supposed to, not necessarily when we want them to. |

| There are people who have experience doing the sec/rec thing. They get hired before you. |

| AND I have to agree with Jody and jsut say that the ones that get hired are NOT the ones that consider a secretarial job as "beneath" them or menial. I am a degreed accountant but if I have to do filing or copying or typically secretarial duties then I do it. I hope you arent carrying your disdain for "menial" work to the interviews |

| I can certainly see your side of things. I majored in psychology and am having to apply for menial jobs like secretary, customer service, and even data entry. I know while some may think that these jobs are useful...... which they are, but we never did sign up for this. We decided on investing 4 years of college for a degree in Psychology. I received my degree in 1999. However, little did I know that a BS degree in Psychology is just that a BS degree.....Anybody, can apply for a customer service type job. Therefore, I have to say word to the wise....... If you chose to major in Psychology, then you should go all the way to get your Masters. Also, sometimes that is not enough..... you may also want to make sure you get a certification like a LMSW or LPC. The other route is to go back and get a business degree of some sort to increase your pay rate. I wish I knew then what I now know. I would have not wasted my time on four years of college with a psychology degree. I would have probably majored in business or accounting. The best option for me is to go back to school and get a masters that is business related. |

| I believe what he is trying to say is that 'secretarial work' is not what he desires to do. It is a very important job overall, but may not be as important to do to each individual. I can understand because I have had to take jobs that were not my dream job, or what I went to school for and its frustrating. You go to school thinking that you are doing the right thing to be successful - but then it seems not good enough for the career you went to school for. That just doesn't make sense. |
